With economic development in China and India increasing the amount of automobiles in use, any advances in fuel economy and reduction in pollutants will be counterbalanced by the increased number of vehicles. Since Henry Ford introduced the automobile based transportation concept over a hundred years ago, the concept has grown until it is perceived as the only transportation paradigm in many parts of the world. We can no longer continue to buy $30,000 toys to throw them away in a few years. Our economy can't handle the drain and the world's resources will not be sufficient to support our habit. What gives our generation the right to pillage the world's resources?

The only way to reduce our consumption of the earth's resources and decrease the damage we are causing to the atmosphere is to implement a long distance, underground shuttle system. To make the system effective it must be implemented in conjunction with a hybrid leased vehicle system. The easy access to high speed mass transportation in conjunction with a leased vehicle system would combine to give us a true point to point transportation system.

Key Benefits

bulletA long distance system would give the largest initial advantage for the least cost. As the system expands, shorter local systems can be appended.
bulletAn underground system will not be noisy or an eye sore to homes nearby. Being below the frost line will substantially reduce the decay of the system. Likewise, by allowing the shuttle to float on a cushion of air wear will minimized, allowing the system to function with minimum maintenance and to last for centuries. An investment in our infrastructure today could still benefit our great-great grand children.
bulletSmall shuttles, holding 10-20 people could leave as close to ten seconds apart, depending on demand. This would allow a continuous flow of traffic and very little wait time. Long trains have large intervals of time between departures.
bulletBy locating the shuttle stations in major metropolitan areas, the transportation system would attract business and jobs to the cities. This would add incentives to investing in the cities and reverse the trend of urban flight.

Cost:

The shuttles are held above the pads by electro-magnets and compressed air. This means the pads the shuttles run on receive much less wear than they experience with concentrated loads from tires. Being underground, the support system avoids the deterioration experienced from snow, salt, and constant freezing and thawing, thus avoiding the the primary causes of decay for roads above ground. Being below the frost line provides a more stable foundation. High volume roads typically have to be maintained yearly and completely replaced every ten to twenty years. An underground system, though more expensive initially, lasts for centuries. Building an underground shuttle system is an investment in the nation’s infrastructure, adding value to where we live instead of our trash dumps.

An underground system cuts cost in other ways. Power transmission lines are not just an eye sore. To maintain an above land power grid, crews must constantly trim back and cut down trees. Storms cause extensive repair costs, lost service and potential threats to life. The same underground transportation system provides conduit for electrical and communications systems.
